From Mrs. Vogel's Sherben |
I can not even remember the last time I did a Tuesdays With Dorie. I have been meaning to get right back into it week after week, but the timing always seems off. Well, I looked and saw that Teanna from Spork or Foon? picked a super easy TWD recipe for this week's challenge. At last, my opportunity!
First let me tell you, you must go over to see Ms. T's blog. It is a great one. It is full of energy, laughs, and great recipes with pictures. Second, on her site you will find the recipe posted for Mrs. Vogel's Scherben, Dorie Greenspan's borrowed recipe. In her post, Teanna apologizes for worrying TWD'ers about working with hot grease. Being one who was raised in a "fried cooking"- state and household, I did not even know there was anything to be concerned about. I mean my toddler was playing in the kitchen as I fried my baby scherbens up! She even got the first sample.
This recipe was so easy to prepare and make. I am definitely marking this as a keeper and filing it under "one to make with my nieces when they visit", because they love to play along as little chefs with their Auntie Carolina.
My daughter, Savannah, preferred hers without the sugar. She said without it the fried dough tasted like Chinese crispies. I agree. All in all, the kids liked them a lot. They reminded them of sopapillas or bunuelos (another Mexican fried sweet tortilla dish).
Being a student of Whatever, I did not stick to the recipe's instruction as written. I could not find my ruler, so I just sliced my dough up as I fancied. I also eyeballed the oil's depth in the pan (close enough to 4 inches I am sure) and guesstimated that my oil was at the recommended 350F for frying. I also sprinkled my cinnamon sugar on instead of dusting it. I did dust my powdered sugar on, but chose to "over powder" it. What can I say? I have a sweet tooth.
All in all, everything turned out fine. Not as pretty as Ms. T's or Dorie's, but pretty tasty all the same. BTW, I used my iPhone for all my pictures. I just could not bring myself to trek the stairs to get my new Christmas camera from my hubby.
Here is how I did it:
Yup, the scherben tastes great on ice cream! Really, why does Dorie refer to these fried strips as cookies? Even my boys looked at me like I was crazy calling them that.
Good to be back with the TWD gang!
Thanks, Teanna, for picking such a simple and sweet recipe!

Sounds like a most delightful dessert and such fun to make.
I'm good with the frying, too. I was thinking these would be great with ice cream, now I know!
anything fried is always taste good, and ice cream is even better
Oh, they look lovely, and their little accompaniment looks lovely as well! I was trying and trying to remember what they reminded me of without the sugar and you are right...the Chinese crispies! Thanks, it was driving me nuts. We loved them over here, and I am thinking it is a keeper as well. It was fun messing with the dough, etc. and not expensive at all!
These were so good! Your scherben turned out beautifully!
Glad to see that you're back with TWD!:)
Ok, now this is the way to have Scherben. With a side of ice cream! I'm glad to see you back in action with TWD.
I was thinking of putting these on ice cream, but I forgot! I am SO GLAD you are back to TWD! And I am glad that you are not afraid to fry! Thanks for frying along with me this week!
Fried and with ice-cream?! I'm in!
These sound so perfect with ice cream, yum!
I wanted to try mine with ice cream, but the kids eat them before I had a chance. Yours look delightful.

This looks incredible. But my favorite part is that you are a student of "whatever". I am a graduate of that myself!
Oh my goodness. Your tutorial was so excellent! As always you have totally outdone yourself! And next weeks project sounds TOO delish for words. I am not going to even type any more. I am going to just close my eyes and dream of those... YUM!
Wow I had no idea what that was! Cool
