This week's challenge was Dorie's Thanksgiving Twofer Pie, half pumpkin, half pecan pie brought to us courtesy of Vibi from La Casserole Carrée.
Half pecan, half pumpkin pie, how can you go wrong? Well, take a seat. Just kidding. Actually, this challenge was not bad at all. Making a homemade pie crust is a little more work than let's say buying prepackaged ones and making a homemade pie is definitely more work than let's say buying fancy store bought, but definitely making your own homemade pie does feel like quite the accomplishment! Think back to Rocky running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, except raising his pie, instead of his arms in victory!
I must admit that I was going to use a store bought crust and not even attempt mingling in with the craft of pie crust rolling. However, my good friend and fellow foodie, Dragana, would not hear of it. Thanks, Dragana, for showing me how to roll out the dough! You made this challenge less intimidating for me. This pie crust recipe was thicker than we expected. I love thick crusts, so it works for me, but it did not allow for all the filling to go in, at least for my pie.
My grandma always made her own pies, so this was a blast in the past for me. I will admit to buying pies in the recent past. Now, I think since I have broadened my culinary horizons and have seen and smelled the rewards of baking your own pie, I will make them more often now. Well, at least the fillings. I can do a Sandra Lee, semi-homemade, right?
Okay to sum up:
- Crust a little thicker than we thought it would be, slightly hard to roll, and did not allow for much filling. Next time, will try different pan or crust recipe.
- Took Pie Crust a little longer to bake than expected.
- I had to overbake by ten minutes than the recommended time in order for knife to come out clean.
- My first time baking my own homemade pie was a good experience.
Happy Thanksgiving! Go Cowboys!!!

Yay! I'm glad you made your own pie crust. Homemade is 10x better than store bought.

Home-made pie crust is *so* much better! It takes a few times to get used to doing it, but the taste doesn't even compare. :) Looks like you had an absolutely fantastic Thanksgiving!
